Barbara Sullivan is a New York City–based artist working across painting, photography, drawing, and mixed materials. A graduate of Parsons School of Design, her work has been exhibited in Hamburg, Berlin, and New York City, and utilized in music, film, and theater.

Her practice explores psychological and emotional narratives. In her photographic work, she investigates perception and ambiguity through low light and long exposure preferring the “indecisive moment”. In painting, she emphasizes line and gesture, often incorporating drawing and mixed materials. Her current body of work draws inspiration from 1920s Berlin nightlife—its performance, transformation, and self-invention. An ongoing thread within this series is the dancehall, approached as a space of fluid identity and transactional exchange. Within these scenes, she captures figures not as fixed portraits but as transient states shaped by performance, desire, and the gaze of others.
